All Things German
Regardless of whether you find yourself in NYC or somewhere else in the country (or world!), here are a few fun in-person and virtual experiences to stay connected with German culture and language this summer.
In NYC
- Neue Galerie
- While the museum remains closed at this time, the museum has several online programs that are running, and the Book Store and Design Shop are also open for virtual orders
- Goethe Institute
- As stated above, Goethe Institute in New York is currently virtual due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, there may be opportunities for future in-person events if local restrictions change in the coming months
- German food
- Connect with German culture through the many German restaurants in NYC!

- Walking tour
- Retrace German heritage in NYC by exploring Little Germany, which is what is now known as the East Village and Lower East Side
- Weisse Garten
- In what is now known as Tompkins Square Park
- Important public space with beer gardens, libraries, sports clubs, theatres, and German schools
- German-American Shooting Society Clubhouse
- At 12 St. Mark’s Place
- Look out for the inscription “Einigkeit macht stark,” or “Unity strengthens”
In General
- Goethe Institute
- Although the Goethe Institute offices are currently closed to the public because of COVID-19 restrictions, there are a number of virtual offerings that are easy to attend for wherever in the country you might be
- German language
- Media and Technology
- This page contains a podcast and several articles that focus on relevant German-American topics
- Included is a list of German TV shows that are available to watch in the US
- One includes a series of articles on Uwe Johnson’s New York, a famous German writer who lived in New York in the 1960s
- Wunderbar Together
- This organization hosts events (virtual for now) across the United States related to German-American topics, ranging from science to art and culture to business
